It is good to know that if it is your first time growing mushrooms, they always pick the strains or species of magic mushrooms that are easy to grow. One of these strains is the Psilocybe cubensis. They are very easy to grow and has a number of varieties as well.
Materials Needed
- A spore print or syringe of your preferred psilocybin cubensis mushroom.
- Bunsen burner with a gas bottle.
- 1 pack of Petri dish with agar-agar in it.
- 3-4 large preserving jars.
- One wide and a large needle. You can opt to use a knitting needle.
- A stock of vermiculite.
- 10 kg of rice flour.
- A pressure cooker.
- A sharp knife. A scalpel will work bets.
- 2-3 large Styrofoam boxes. You need to make sure that they can be opened and closed. It is also important to see to it that it has an airtight aluminum foil on the inner parts. This will help in keeping humidity in and keeping the outer humidity out.
- Organic rye.
Your step by step guide on growing your magic mushroom
Step 1– The first thing that you need to do is to prepare your grow room. You have to see to it that it is free from dust and it doesn’t have any mold issues. You also need to set up your Bunsen burner and make sure that it will have a stable state. This is to make sure that nothing will happen once it will fall to its side.
Step 2– Bring up the needle, the magic mushroom spore, and Petri dishes. You need to make sure though that the lids of the Petri dish is still close. You can open them once you are ready to use them already.
Step 3– Get your magic mushroom spore print ready in your working table. You now need to hold the needle into the flame of the Bunsen burner. Keep it on the flame until it gets red. Cool it down. Hold it again on the flame for around 3-5 seconds. Wait for a few seconds until it reaches room temperature and then press it into the spore print. You now can open the Petri dish and place the needle into the agar-agar and close it again. You need to do this process very quick. You need to see to it that you will take off the lid completely. What you can do is to lift it and make space for you to insert the needle inside. You need to do this so that there is only a little exposure of the Petri dish from the air outside.
Step 4 – You need to do the same process with the 3 other Petri dishes that you have. Place the Petri dishes in a dark room with an average temperature. In just 4-10 days, you will slowly see that the magic mushrooms will start to colonize the agar-agar. Once you have noticed that the whole Petri dish has been colonized then you must get ready for the next step.
Step 5 – You now need to mix 1 part of vermiculite and 1 part of rice flour as well as 3 parts of organic rye. Spread your mixture evenly into the jars that you have. You need to make sure that you will still avoid any dirt or dust in your mixture. Keep it sterile as much as possible. Before you are about to close the lids of the jars that you need to place 2 small coffee cups of water into each jar.
Step 6 – Place the jars inside the pressure cooker and make sure that it is sealed and place it in low heat. You need to remember that once these jars undergo heat and cooled down immediately that there is a chance that they could break. With the full heat on, let the jars sit for around 60 minutes. This requires some time since steam is not as hot as the actual flame.
Step 7 – Take your knife or scalpel as well as your Petri dish. You now must have a full colonized Petri dish. Get the scalpel over your Bunsen burner to make it sterile. Let it cool down of a bit. Once cooled, you can now cut the agar-agar into slammer square pieces. You can make around 5-10 small squares of colonized agar-agar.
Step 8 – Put on some sterile gloves and use sterile forceps. Grab your jars and open them. Place some small pieces of agar-agar in your jars. Do the same thing as putting your spores into the Petri dish. See to it that it will be exposed to the air for the shortest time possible.
Step 9 – You now need to place the jars in the same place where you have kept your Petri dishes. You need to monitor it for a few days and see how they are able to dig into your feeding media. You need to give your mushrooms time t colonize until they are able to fill half of the jars.
Step 10– Prepare the same mixture like what you have done in your jars. Add the same amount of ware and place them inside the pressure cooker. Wait for 15 minutes and take them out, spread them into your grow boxes. In this stage, your magic mushrooms are still vulnerable to contamination but they are not so fragile anymore like that of a spore.
Step 11– Take out the colonize material from the jar and mix them into your grow box. You need to remember that you still need to work fast and make sure that the box will not be kept open off a long time.
Step 12– Keep the temperature around 24 degrees Celsius. This is the best temperature of psilocybin mushrooms to grow. Make sure that you will check on them every day. See to it that they have the right humidity. The medium should also be soaked in water always. You can spray distilled water once you have noticed that the temperature is falling down or the humidity is not the same.
